165 years of Woodend cricket

Formed in a pub on the Mount Alexander Road in the year the railway reached Woodend. Still here, still volunteer run, and premiers again.

Since 1861

The story so far

In January 1861 a meeting at Joseph Harper's Woodend Inn signed up about thirty members. Harper, later described as the founder of Woodend, was its first mayor, and two years on his horse Banker won the third Melbourne Cup.

Kyneton Advertiser · 18 January 1861

It is to be hoped that the Woodend Cricket Club may prosper, and ere long be in a position to compete with the clubs of the neighbouring towns.
